Aloha Monday! it's 9/30/2019 ... Bye to September 2019.. Aloha to October tomorrow! We will have our usual 1st Sunday 10/6 dance, FREE for all dancers belong to another club but your  donation is always welcomed. (Mahalo to Ben for the donation on 09/01).

You can dress up with your Halloween costume or just come dance as your heart desired.. I am sure this entire October you will see a lot of people dress up just because it's Halloween month.

This coming Saturday Oct. 5th, we also have our 1st  Round dance workshop from 1-4pm... and the 2nd RD dance workshop will be  on Oct. 12th conducted by Mom Barbara ( I will be in Thailand). 

Please come dance with us and have some fun!

Just a heads up for you all... After a short meeting and talk... Hawaii Roundabouts will continue to carry RD dance workshops at Palladium (even though I may have to pay from my own pocket).. it's ok with me because RD dance is my passion and I am eager to share our fun dance with the community.

Also the Square Wheelers / Hayseeds SQ Dance club will continue its monthly dance at Palladium (it's too good to give up). The dance schedule will change to 3rd Sunday but not all of them on the 3rd Sunday.  By end of October we should have more info to share with you all... Please be patient and be supportive of our clubs.

Personally I appreciate all the support from some of you Paradise Shufflers SDC dancers... and I promise that if you guys ever need dancers from town side to fill your square, please let me know. I want to thank our friends from near and far for all the encouragement words on FB, & email... I am the willing party to chip in my money to make this 2 clubs going and to share the fun dancing! I personally think round dance will make most ballroom dancers even a better dancer or really enjoy dancing because everyone should know their part of dancing! 

See you all at Palladium this coming Saturday 1-4 pm & Sunday 5:30-8:30 pm...

Aloha Dance Club 45th Anniversary Showcase

Hot and muggy! That's gotta be a good description outside of the Ala Wai Palladium last Saturday evening. It was mighty refreshing and cool inside the ballroom but hot to trot as many dancers were "burning the floor" to the upbeat rhythm from Music Dee Jay Henry Lee. As I entered the doorway, I was greeted by the lovely Dianne Ako. A few seconds later ADC President Gordon Wong welcomed me. (Gordon had invited Lani and me as his guests).  I got to the Palladium a little after seven and snacks & refreshments were still being being served. There were a good number of volunteers serving at the Reception Table and at the "food line".

The volunteers and support teams were Jane Umeda, Joanne Keaukulani, Delores DeLima, Elliott Oshiro, Greg Wong,  Chun, Lotti, Tu, Tamalyn, Jose & Ann Ramelb and Gordon Wong. (my apology if I missed a name). Everybody was busy as a bee that I could get a shot of only three of them...Jane Umeda, Jose & Ann Ramelb. 

THE SHOWCASE got underway at 7:45 with Lady EmCee Dianne Ako introducing herself and some important guests including presidents of various dance organizations. She followed with a short history of how the Aloha Dance Club began. She also thank the many volunteers and support team who help made

this event a success.

ACT ONE:: Dianne introduced Tsun Hui Hung who has the unique talent of playing on an instrument called the ERHU. Tsun began playing the ERHU at the age of six and has performed with the ERHU all over the world.

ACT TWO: The Hawaii Eastern Art Troupe with nine dances performed the CAI WEI ( Gathering Vetch). This classical Han dance that is set 3 thousand years ago depicts a conscripted soldier n an arduous journey back to his homeland after the war, expressing sorrow and longing for his family. Recalling when he left for battle the vetch leaves being harvested and willows swayed in the springtime breeze. Now under heavy snowy winter skies, trudging home alone, feeling downhearted, and grieving for his wasted youth. The dancers are Shuo Zhao, Nany Chow, Tonghua Lin, Angel Rosenfeld, Xiaohong Bono, Shirley Wong, Audrey Wang, Brenda Matsui, and Wan Ping Oshiro. The troup which has over 30 members is the largest Chinese Art Troupe of its kind in Hawaii and have been performing Chinese Classical and Ethnic dances at various ceremonial, commercial, or social occasions. .    

ACT THREE: Jacky Lei and Hana Yin dance in the performance of the Foxtrot. Jacky is from China and has taught Ballroom dancing for over 20 years. He has won championship titles in Shengen, was in the final reel of Rising Stars in competition in Guangdong Province, China.

Hana Yin has been dancing for over 20 years and has been taught by Blackpool Professional Finallist, and other World Champions. Hana with Gordon Won competed in the Hawaii Star Ball and was ranked number one in all Standard Dances in the Bronze Level.  She is also the recipient of the "Best of the Best" scholarship of International Ballroom Bronze Level when she competed in the Pro AM with Lucas Jaime.

Dancing continued till 9:30.  Mahalo to Gordon Wong for inviting Lani and me as his guests, and a Big Thank You to Dianne Ako for sharing her program notes with me.

USA Dance Monthly Dance

Lani and I were invited to last Saturday USA Dance Monthly Dance as guests of Ravi and Synthia. (Thank you, Ravi and Synthia). Our hosts wrote that there will be a Flashmob Salsa presentation at 7:45. I got to the Palladium about 7:30 and the place was jumping to the upbeat music from Ravi and Synthia. Familiar and friendly faces Delia and Lorrie were at the Reception Table. Later Candy joined them. I couldn't place the names of the couple at the next table but the lady sure looked like a lady that use to perform in solo dance exhibitions some years back. Anyway, the goodies on the table sure looked onolicious.

USA Dance President Ed said a few words before the showcase started and then he passed the microphone to Ravi who EmCeed the program. There were two performances that evening.. The first by Calvin and Debra who performed a variation of the International Foxtrot to the catchy tune, "Ball In The Jack"  Their movements were so smooth and impeccable that it was beautiful to watch.  (So beautiful to watch that I missed taking a video). Auwea!

The Flashmob Salsa presentation came on next. There were 18 dancers led by Ed and Candy, and the group performed really good and to the delight of the audience..

Ravi explained: "The 2019 Flashmob presentation was part of the USA Dance Honolulu chapter's (early) celebration of the 2019 National Ballroom Dance Week, September 20-29, 2019

National Ballroom Dance Week is celebrated all over the United States by both Amateurs and Professionals, Studios and Clubs to promote the benefits of ballroom dance.

During this week, the Honolulu chapter will be performing at multiple locations on the island to promote and encourage ballroom dance as a hobby and exercise".

After the Flashmob presentation, general dancing resumed and that was my cue to head back home after thanking Ravi and Synthia.

ABDA Polka Dots Dance at the Palladium

Lani and I have not been to a Polka Dots Dance ever. So this was gonna be something new to us. We were invited to this dance party by ABDA President Deanie Bates Burgess. We got to the Palladium a little
after 7 PM. No problem getting past the Reception Table. Deanie already set aside complimentary tickets for us. One of the ladies went to call Deanie who came to escort Lani and me to two reserved seats. That was mighty nice of our host because chairs were three deep along three quarters of the perimeter of the EWA Ballroom, and it was SRO (Standing Room Only). The dance music was non-stop and nearly all the dancers were on the floor. Appears that there were three DeeJays when Bert, Deanie, and Wayne took turns playing the music.
My main squeeze and I got to dance a bit of the Bolero, Waltz, Cha Cha, Rumba, and Swing. Couldn't let those good tunes go to waste and it wasn't bad action for my aging legs either.. (just kidding).

I got to make the rounds around the ballroom for some paparazzi "when you least expected" camera shots. The dancers tonight weren't camera shy and I thank them for allowing me to take their pictures. For all fairness to those that I didn't get their names, I have not put any names on the photos except of course those of our hosts. Fair 'nuff! Most of those in this photo gallery are friends and acquaintances of Lani and me from long time ago.

Deanie Burgess made a few announcements during a short break which included the IBDI  Autumn Festival &  Dance at the Hawaii Kai Retirement Community this coming Sunday.  Thank you, Deanie.  General dancing resumed with a Samba. It was a upbeat and happy Samba that brought a good number of Line Dancers onto the floor. The leaders and followers performed the Samba Line Dance with form and "full of life" expression as they circled the entire ballroom. Refreshments were served on the open lanai. It was a good time to cool down and chat with some acquaintances. Especially with a couple of ladies who were with Lani in the Rock & Roll Escapade, and Can Can Dance Exhibition Showcase with another dance organization. Time goes by fast when having fun reminiscing old times. And it was almost closing time. So it was time to go back into the ballroom and say good night to our host Deanie Burgess with a thank you for inviting us hug.
